The Reason We Ride
On January 9, 2026, Gary Hickey, the longtime chef and partner at Charro Steak, left work feeling off. By the time he reached the hospital, he couldn't get out of his car.
Within an hour, he was paralyzed from the chest down. Doctors found a rare stroke that had localized to his thoracic spinal cord. At 50 years old, in the prime of his career, the man Tucson knew for cutting steaks and feeding his city couldn't move his legs.
Today, Gary is walking with a cane. He's home. He's fighting every single day in physical therapy with his sights set on one thing: getting back to his kitchen, his crew, and his life.
But the road ahead requires more than what insurance covers. Gary is pursuing regenerative stem cell therapy in Mexico to support his recovery after the stroke. It's advanced treatment his insurance won't touch, and one of his best shots at getting fully back on his feet. It isn't cheap.
That's where we come in. Tucson takes care of its own. And on July 26, we're throwing the kind of night Gary would throw for any one of us: Vegas style, full house, no shortage of suits.
In His Own Words
“I'm a gambler. I know I've got the best hand right now, so I'm just riding it out.”
